Description

Exceptional pair of baluster vases in polychrome majolica, signed Gerbing & Stephan from Bodenbach, Austria, 1885. The Gerbing & Stephan company is renowned for its 19th-century historicist majolicas, featuring particularly refined decorations. Each vase showcases an elegant ovoid shape resting on a molded base with scrolls. The bodies are adorned, in wide oval reserves, with a polychrome decoration on both sides of the vases, depicting small birds perched amidst a naturalistic floral intertwining, treated with remarkable finesse of drawing. The shoulders are framed by finely sculpted, openwork rocaille handles, representing dragons. The flared necks adopt a dynamic silhouette inspired by Renaissance and neo-baroque repertoires. The set is enhanced by abundant geometric and botanical ornamentation in slight relief, highlighted with shades of gold, cobalt blue, olive green, and ivory. The quality of the glaze, the richness of the ornithological decoration, and the balance of the shapes testify to the craftsmanship of this factory that specialized in the production of majolicas. Both are in very good condition.

No cracks, no restoration. Bright glaze and fresh colors.
