José VAN GUCHT (1913–1980) Belgian Expressionist Painter José Van Gucht (1913–1980) was a Belgian painter active in the second half of the 20th century. His work is part of the post-war expressionist movement, during which many European artists favored the power of gesture, chromatic intensity, and psychological exploration of the subject. Van Gucht developed a powerful painting style, constructed with broad strokes and impasto, where matter plays a central role. The human figure occupies an important place in his production. His portraits do not seek academic likeness but inner expression, conveyed through the deliberate distortion of features, color tension, and an energetic composition. His palette often combines cool tones (blues, purples, grays) with bursts of reds and oranges, creating dramatic contrasts and a vibrant atmosphere. — Work proposed Portrait of a Man Oil on Canvas Dimensions: 120 × 81 cm Date: presumably 1960s Signed lower right This large vertical composition fully illustrates the artist's expressionist language. The male face, placed at the center, emerges from a swirling background composed of blues, purples, whites, and reds. The brushstroke is broad, nervous, sometimes almost violent, revealing a rich and worked material. The overlapping brushstrokes structure the space and create a circular movement around the head. The features are accentuated and fragmented: dark and intense gaze, angular modeling, volumes constructed by successive impastos. A red/orange cross traverses the composition, adding a symbolic dimension and enhancing the overall dramatic tension. The contrast between the bright white areas and the deep backgrounds accentuates the effect of the face's emergence. The work exudes a strong presence and great emotional power, typical of the expressionist portraits of the 1960s. — Condition Generally good condition. Slight signs of wear along the edges visible in the photos. Large format canvas offering strong decorative and artistic impact.
