José VAN GUCHT (1913–1980) Belgian Expressionist Painter José Van Gucht (1913–1980) is a Belgian painter active in the second half of the 20th century. His work is part of the post-war expressionist movement, a period during which many European artists emphasize the power of gesture, chromatic intensity, and the psychological exploration of the subject. Van Gucht develops a powerful painting style, constructed with broad strokes and impasto, where material plays a central role. The human figure occupies an important place in his body of work. His portraits do not seek academic resemblance but rather inner expression, conveyed through intentional distortion of features, tension in colors, and energetic composition. His palette often combines cool tones (blues, violets, grays) with bursts of reds and oranges, creating dramatic contrasts and a vibrant atmosphere. — Expressionist Composition – Animal Figure (probably feline, possibly tiger) Oil on canvas Dimensions: 120 × 81 cm Dated: likely 1960s Signed at the bottom right This significant oil painting on canvas presents an animal figure interpreted in a powerful expressionist style. At the center of the composition emerges a frontal animal face whose structure evokes a feline—possibly a tiger. The gaze is direct and intense, the features angular and deliberately distorted, built through layers of material. The brushwork is free and energetic. The strokes are visible, sometimes nervous, sometimes broader, creating internal movement on the surface. The composition is dynamic, structured by diagonal lines and forms that seem to be in tension. The animal appears to surge from the pictorial space, giving the whole a sense of instinctive strength and assertive presence. The work fully illustrates the artist's expressionist approach, where the subject becomes an expressive interpretation rather than a faithful descriptive representation. Large format providing strong decorative and artistic presence. — Condition Good overall condition. Slight peripheral wear visible in photos. Unframed canvas.
