José VAN GUCHT (1913–1980) Belgian Expressionist Painter José Van Gucht (1913–1980) was a Belgian painter active in the second half of the 20th century. His work is part of the post-war expressionist movement, during which many European artists favored the power of gesture, chromatic intensity, and psychological exploration of the subject. Van Gucht developed a powerful painting style, constructed with broad strokes and impastos, where texture plays a central role. The human figure holds a significant place in his production. His portraits do not seek academic resemblance but rather inner expression, translated through the intentional distortion of features, the tension of colors, and an energetic composition. His palette frequently combines cool tones (blues, purples, grays) with bright reds and oranges, creating dramatic contrasts and a vibrant atmosphere. ⸻ Expressionist Composition – Animal Figure (probably feline, possibly tiger) Oil on canvas Dimensions: 120 × 81 cm Dating: probably 1960s Signed bottom right This important oil painting features an animal figure interpreted in a powerful expressionist style. At the center of the composition emerges a frontal animal face whose structure suggests a feline—possibly a tiger. The gaze is direct and intense, the features angular and intentionally distorted, constructed through layers of material. The brushwork is free and energetic. The strokes are visible, sometimes nervous, sometimes broader, creating an internal movement on the surface. The composition is dynamic, structured by diagonal lines and forms that seem to be in tension. The animal appears to leap from the pictorial space, giving the whole an impression of instinctive force and strong presence. The work fully illustrates the artist's expressionist approach, where the subject becomes an expressive interpretation rather than a faithful descriptive representation. Large format offering strong decorative and artistic presence. ⸻ Condition Good overall condition. Slight peripheral wear visible in photos. Unframed canvas.
