Henri Rivière (1864-1951) is a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground etching, specifically aquatint, in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a stage director and set designer, in 1886, at the shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, improving the shows by creating very innovative colored backdrops. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making a name for himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
