JAPAN MINIATURE MASK SIGN EDO PERIOD XIXTH CARVED WOOD M773Here is a very beautiful mask from Japan, probably from the Edo period without certainty, 1830-1850. The polychromy is original. This mask can either be a Noh theater mask or was it used as a nameplate (as currently for our mailboxes). These masks were executed in the effigy of the master of the place. In each city and village of Japan a craftsman was specialized in their creation. This one is particularly expressive. For the state, we report friction, wear on the polychromy, lack of stucco especially on the nose and the perimeter at the bottom, a hole on the top with what seems to be a badly executed restoration, everything is visible on photos.
