Description

Very beautiful and rare watercolor, English School of the 19th century, reproducing a work by Henry Thomas Alken (1784-1851), depicting an English rider on a thoroughbred, holding a whip in his right hand and a lorgnette in his left hand. This is a reworking of a famous engraving published by J. Fuller and engraved in a series by Alken in 1820. Henri Thomas Alken is a well-known English painter and engraver recognized as a painter, engraver, and illustrator of sporting subjects and training scenes. Here, we have a rider in a red frock coat and black hat on his horse, with two geographical indications behind on a post: Melton and Oakham. Condition: the watercolor is in excellent condition. The colors are very fresh, and there is a stain in front of the left hand and three small defects in the paper at the top of the sky. At the top, along the edge, there is a mark from an old frame. It features a gilded wooden frame with glass, enhanced by a gray and brown mat. Frame size: L 40 cm H 30.5 cm. Watercolor size: L 30 cm H 21 cm. For animal themes, specifically horses, and from the Victorian era in the UK. For shipping, prefer Colissimo over Locker delivery.
