Terracotta sculpture of a Mandolin Player after 'Mignon' by Joseph Le Guluche, height 57.5 cm.
This tall sculpture looks impressive and captures attention. This version, merely covered in white, is much more pleasing than the glazed and colored ones, like the original versions by Joseph Le Guluche.
It is signed, and the signature is to be identified; see photo 6. Likewise, the stamp is to be identified; see photo 4.
Thus, it is a work based on Joseph Le Guluche (1849-1915), or revisiting this character. The character of Mignon comes from a comic opera, and it originally stems from a novel by Goethe. However, in this novel, her tragic ending could have clashed with the conventions of comic operas which required a happy ending. Therefore, in the pragmatic French version, Mignon (pronounced Mignonne like Goethe) will get married, leaving space for a large posterity. This also allowed room for hundreds of additional performances!
This sculpture is in very good (if not excellent) condition: no chips or cracks. There is a small loss of white on the bottom of the left leg; see photo 9.
The height is 57.5 cm, and the 75 cl wine bottle is not included in the lot but serves as a comparison.
The weight is 3.8 kg, and the shipping weight will be over 5 kg to account for the extensive protection.
