Prussia was originally a territory in northeastern Europe that was partially Germanized under the control of the Teutonic Knights but located outside of the Holy Roman Empire. By the 16th century, Prussia became a possession of a branch of the Hohenzollerns and was later united with the Electorate of Brandenburg (the Berlin region) in the 17th century. From 1701 to 1871, Prussia was an essential part of the Kingdom of Prussia, incorporated into the German Empire in 1871 (the Second German Empire). In this context, original Prussia corresponds to the province of East Prussia, especially after World War I, when it became isolated from the rest of Germany.
