Hippolyte Bellangé (1800-1866) Hippolyte Bellangé is a 19th-century French painter and lithographer, trained in the workshop of Antoine-Jean Gros. A versatile artist, he excels in history painting as well as in genre scenes, portraits, and lively compositions. His sense of drawing, the vibrancy of his compositions, and the quality of his lithographs brought him early recognition: he exhibited at the Salon starting in 1824 and received several official awards throughout his career. Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1834, Bellangé left behind a varied body of work that reflects the romantic aesthetic and the 19th-century taste for visual narratives and the expression of movement.
