Description

André COTTAVOZ (1922–2012) French painter and sculptor, André Cottavoz is a major figure of the "Groupe de Savoie," a movement associated with the emerging figurative painting in post-war France. Born in Saint-Marcellin in 1922, he studied at the Fine Arts School in Lyon alongside Fusaro, Truphémus, Charron, and other artists who would leave their mark on the Lyon art scene. Cottavoz developed a vigorous, textured painting style early on, characterized by thick paint applied with a knife, giving his compositions an almost sculptural relief. His work is deeply tied to reality: landscapes, urban scenes, still lifes, flowers, studios, all treated with vibrant color energy and light. His powerful style, sometimes described as "modern baroque," sets him apart in 20th-century figurative painting. From the 1970s, he expanded his research to bronze sculpture, rediscovering the same expressiveness through modeling. Winner of the Fénéon Prize (1953), he exhibited in Paris, Europe, and Japan as early as the 1950s, where his work met with great success. Several French museums hold his works, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and the Musée de Saint-Étienne. André Cottavoz passed away in 2012, leaving behind a rich body of work sought after by collectors.
