Engraving, unframed, to note a few small stains, see Photo Biography – Leonor Fini (1907–1996) Leonor Fini is a major 20th-century artist, born in Buenos Aires in 1907 and raised in Trieste, before permanently settling in Paris in the 1930s. Self-taught, she quickly established herself in European intellectual and artistic circles and drew closer to the surrealist movement, while maintaining total independence from its dogmas. Painter, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator, Leonor Fini develops a unique, dreamlike, and symbolic universe, populated by androgynous figures, hybrid creatures, skeletons, and enigmatic scenes. Her work explores the themes of dreams, metamorphosis, feminine power, and death, with great formal freedom. She also collaborates as an illustrator for numerous literary works (Baudelaire, Poe, Shakespeare, Sade), as well as for theater, opera, and haute couture. Her works are now included in the greatest international public and museum collections. ⸻ Description of the work Original engraving by Leonor Fini representing an allegorical scene composed of stylized skeletal figures, rendered with a nervous, linear, and extremely expressive drawing style. The composition, deliberately stripped down, highlights the movement of bodies and the psychological tension between the characters, characteristics of the artist's graphic vocabulary. The fine and incisive line, combined with an almost theatrical staging, fully places this work within Leonor Fini's symbolic and surreal universe, where death and the imaginary engage in a dialogue of elegance and irony. ⸻ Origin of the engraving This print is an original engraving (etching) made by Leonor Fini, drawn from an illustrated work published in the 20th century, as part of her significant activity as a literary illustrator. The work was printed on vellum paper, with wide margins, in accordance with the practices of art publishing of the time. ? Engraving not later than, originating from an old edition, and not from a modern reproduction.
