Self-taught, she quickly established herself in European artistic and intellectual circles while maintaining an independent stance towards the surrealist movement, with which she is often associated but never formally adhered to. A painter, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator, Leonor Fini develops a unique, poetic, and symbolic universe populated by androgynous figures, stylized characters, and both elegant and enigmatic scenes. Her work explores themes of identity, the double, metamorphosis, and feminine power, with great graphic freedom. She collaborates as an illustrator for numerous literary works and also designs sets and costumes for theater and opera.
