Engraving, unsigned, with some small stains, see Photo Biography – Leonor Fini (1907–1996) Leonor Fini is a major 20th-century artist, born in Buenos Aires in 1907 and raised in Trieste, before settling permanently in Paris from the 1930s onwards. Self-taught, she quickly established herself in European artistic and intellectual circles while maintaining an independent stance towards the surrealist movement, with which she is often associated but never formally adhered to. A painter, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator, Leonor Fini develops a unique, poetic, and symbolic universe populated by androgynous figures, stylized characters, and both elegant and enigmatic scenes. Her work explores themes of identity, the double, metamorphosis, and feminine power, with great graphic freedom. She collaborates as an illustrator for numerous literary works and also designs sets and costumes for theater and opera. Her work is now held in many public and private international collections. ⸻ Description of the work Original engraving by Leonor Fini representing two stylized female figures, standing and leaning against each other, treated in an extremely free and fluid line drawing. The bodies are suggested by a network of fine, continuous lines, where anatomical simplification and the elegance of gesture prevail over descriptive detail. The faces, delicately sketched, contrast with the almost abstract lightness of the silhouettes, creating a subtle interplay between presence and erasure. This composition emphasizes the theme of the double and twinship, recurrent in Leonor Fini's graphic work, as well as her taste for assertive, autonomous, and theatrical female figures. The whole stands out for its great economy of means and remarkable expressivity of line, characteristics of the artist's engraved work. ⸻ Origin of the engraving This print is an original engraving (etching) made by Leonor Fini, resulting from her significant work in illustration and graphic publishing in the 20th century. It comes from a book or collection of prints illustrated by the artist, published between the 1940s and 1970s, a period during which Leonor Fini produced numerous engraved plates intended for bibliophile editions or graphic collections. Printed on vellum paper, with wide margins, consistent with the practices of art editions of the time.
