Son of a Lorraine gunsmith, he moved to Paris with his family to escape the Thirty Years' War. Trained under Charles Le Brun, he became in 1674 “designer of the King's Chamber and Cabinet,” a position that entrusted him with the creation of decorations, costumes, and ornaments for the fêtes, ballets, and ceremonies of the court of Louis XIV.
