BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST
Stefano Della Bella, also known as Étienne de la Belle at the French court, was born on May 18, 1610, in Florence and died on July 12, 1664, in the same city (at 54 years old). He was an Italian etcher from the Florentine school, in the Mannerist and Baroque style. The fifth child of the sculptor Francesco di Girolamo Della Bella, the young Stefano completed his training under painters Giovan Battista Vanni and Cesare Dandini. The example of Jacques Callot and the encouragement of the engraver Remigio Cantagallina prompted him to choose the art of engraving. He signed his first etchings as early as 1626-1627. From 1633, he stayed in Rome thanks to the protection of the Medici, and then settled in Paris from 1639 to 1650, where he was known by the French name of Étienne de la Belle. He is considered the best etcher of his time, in the tradition of Callot. He left behind 1,052 prints and several thousand drawings.
