Chair N° 22, by Fiume-Chevallier, circa 1885/90. The N° 22 by Thonet, which served as the model for this “Fiume”, is difficult to acquire as it was produced in limited quantities: only 2,958 pieces in 1885 (N° 4 had 5,582 pieces, N° 16 had 693, and N° 14 had 341,968). Only Fischel produced a N° 22 that is listed in the catalog. (see attached document) Occasionally, in Europe, chairs stamped “FIUME” or “Charles Chevallier” or “CHEVALLIER” are found, sometimes with a label or stamp mentioning “MOEBEL FABRIK- LANDESBANK”. All these pieces likely come from the same manufacturer located in Fiume, the former name of RIJEKA, a city on the Adriatic in present-day Croatia. Fiume, at that time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was an important port for exports as it was the only maritime access for Austria. The strategic port position of Fiume on the Adriatic and the Mediterranean had already been considered by Napoleon; the District of Fiume in civil Croatia was under French administration from 1810 to 1813, which could explain the use of a very French commercial name (Charles Chevallier) shortly after. The fine caning is a recent type called Feingeflecht, the chair is in original, stable, and solid condition. Total height: 90 cm - seat height: 46.5 cm - seat: 41 X 44 cm.
