Large antique botanical drawing – study of flowering cacti – 19th century. Beautiful antique botanical study depicting a flowering epiphytic cactus, executed in graphite pencil on paper. The drawing shows the plant with its flat and serrated, slightly spiny stems, as well as several open and budded flowers, carried out with the careful observation typical of 19th-century naturalist studies. The depicted plant appears to be an epiphytic cactus of the Epiphyllum type (orchid cactus), known for its large spectacular flowers. These drawings were often created as academic exercises or scientific studies in art and botanical schools in the 19th century. Dimensions: approximately 52 cm × 38 cm. Technique: graphite pencil on paper. Period: 19th century. Condition: old paper with some tears and wear along the edges (see photos). The drawing itself remains well preserved. Blank verso. Beautiful naturalistic study that can be framed for decoration or botanical drawing collection. Photos are an integral part of the description. I have included a final photo of the plant to illustrate the plant depicted in the drawing. Of course, this plant is not included in the lot. Authenticity: Original. Type: Drawing. Period: 19th century and earlier. Material: Pencil. Genre: Study. Theme: Floral.
