He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Tokyo, before arriving in Paris in 1927 with several other Japanese artists and friends such as Tsuguharu Foujita and Sadami Yokote. He settled in Montparnasse where he met the painters of the city of artists of La Ruche and in particular Maurice Utrillo. During the Second World War, he was ordered to return to Japan where he became a Japanese army painter for two and a half years. But, where he gets to spend most of that time in his hometown painting. Before returning to France in 1948 and finding his workshop at the foot of the Butte Montmartre. An artist of Parisian life Oguiss' art is essentially views of Paris, transcribed in vibrant colors. It mainly depicts the picturesque neighborhoods or markets, and typical shops like haberdasheries, paper mills, wood or coal merchants. In addition to a very marked colorful palette, the artist also stands out through particular framings, because his street views are most often devoid of human presence, but full of meaning. If the human presence is present, it is always there to highlight small artisans, professions being doomed to disappearance. Thus Oguiss positions himself as an artist preserving the past. A great traveler, he also traveled Europe and painted numerous views of Amsterdam, Antwerp and Venice. An artist in spirit, Oguiss is a multifaceted artist. He will also write and illustrate Les Nouvelles de Paris, in 1951. Likewise, he published his interviews Les Jeunes Peintures de France; in 1981, he published and illustrated Fifty Years of My Artistic Life in Paris. Oguiss will also turn to lithography, allowing him to excel in the art of portraits and views of Paris. He takes us through the city like a stroll. A career linked to exhibitions Oguiss has exhibited a large number of times throughout his career. First of all in Tsuguharu Foujita’s circle of friends. As well as other group exhibitions in Paris, from 1928 at the Salon d’Automne; then 1929 at the Salon des Indépendants; as well as in 1956 with Les Artistes en France. And in the world at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris; or in 1957 at the exhibition of Landscapes of Saint-Denis from the 17th century to the present day. We should also not neglect his Japanese career, where he exhibited in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya; as well as in London; where he favors solitary exhibitions. Finally, numerous retrospectives have taken place on his subject, notably in 1988 at the museums of Tokyo, Kuré, Nagoya, Kyoto, Kamakura; and four months before his death, in 1986, the Museum of Art and History of Saint - Denis.
