Hippolyte Bellangé (1800-1866) Hippolyte Bellangé is a 19th-century French painter and lithographer, trained in the workshop of Antoine-Jean Gros. A versatile artist, he excels in history painting as well as genre scenes, portraits, and animated compositions. His sense of drawing, the liveliness of his compositions, and the quality of his lithographs earn him early recognition: he exhibits as early as 1824 at the Salon and receives several official awards throughout his career. A Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1834, Bellangé leaves a varied body of work that reflects the romantic aesthetic and the 19th-century taste for visual storytelling and the expression of movement.
