Tournai octagonal porcelain plate in the hollow Chinese porcelain style 18th century M2114 Here is a hollow Tournai plate with an octagonal shape. In the center two ducks in a garden lined with peonies on rocks and stools, garlands of flowers on the wing. As for the condition, note small gaps in the decoration and traces of wear on the gilding. In November 1750, the Lille resident François Joseph Peterinck sent a request to the governor of the Netherlands, Charles of Lorraine: to be able to establish a porcelain factory in Tournai under his protection. This request was granted, giving rise to Tournai porcelain, remarkable for its quality and quantity produced over time. Tournai creates numerous luxury pieces that have nothing to envy of the finest European productions. Pieces of this porcelain are preserved in particular at the royal museum of Mariemont, the royal museum of art and history [archive] and the museum of history and decorative arts of Tournai.
