THANGKA DRAWING ON ANCIENT TIBET PAPER A4533This drawing on paper is a thangka. We report some rubbing in places, stains especially in the bottom margin, the edge is slightly warped, the corners are worn, residues of fixings on the corners on the back, however it has remained fresh in color. It wears an inscription 450 at the bottom in the margin. A thangka, also spelled "tangka", "thanka" or "tanka" (pronunciation: [tk), literally "thing that one unrolls", "roll", is a painting, a drawing, or a fabric on canvas originating from India and characteristic of Tibetan Buddhist culture. They come in all sizes, from portable thangkas that can be rolled up and unrolled by means of two sticks passed through hems, to monumental thangkas intended to be unrolled on a hillside area or on a wall. to thangka and which can reach several tens of meters in height. The oldest known thangkas come from a few sites in India, including the Ajantâ caves (2nd century to 5th century), in central India, then in northwestern China, such as the Mogao caves (in Dunhuang , Gansu Province), on the Silk Road. In this second case, they are wall paintings, as we find later in the art of wall paintings in Tibetan Buddhism. The oldest Tibetan cloth thangkas are also found in the Mogao Caves and date from when this area was a colony of the Tibetan Empire (629877), they are dated to around 781-848. The making of thangkas is part of the Regong arts, which include the arts concerning Tibetan Buddhism (painting, sculpture, embroidery, architecture, engraving).
