Description

Elegant plate made of fine earthenware from the Creil & Montereau factory, illustrating one of the famous songs of Béranger: “The Flower Girl and the Undertaker.” The rim is adorned with a palmette and a large garland of vine, typical of the productions from the late 1820s. This series, born in the wake of the great popular enthusiasm surrounding Béranger's trial in 1828, draws on the vignettes and drawings by Monnier that were circulated at the same time. The earliest prints of these plates cannot be earlier than this symbolic year. Dimensions: 21.5 cm Condition: complete plate, with an authentic patina of two centuries, some usage scratches, perfectly embraced charm of time. A poetic and rare witness to the popular culture of the early 19th century. Excerpt from the represented song: “I'll make it short and good, and I consent, Coming by, come take me. But let it not be before ten years. Farewell, so tender undertaker. Maybe in getting impatient, A practice awaits you. Still young and pretty, I sell roses, lilies, and jasmines, And don't feel the urge To pass through your hands.” Country of origin: France.
