Description

Carved wooden statue of Saint Martha crushing La Tarasque late 19th century M3016 This late 19th century sculpture was made in mass, it is walnut. The large sculpture has been finely executed with lovely precision. The saint, standing, full length, is dressed in a long dress, a cloak and a veil. She holds a bucket of holy water and tramples the Tarasque. According to legend, this animal close to the dragon lived near Tarascon and terrorized the population until Saint Martha obtained its submission. Saint Martha is, according to the New Testament, a female disciple of Jesus Christ. She is the sister of Lazarus and Mary of Bethany. She witnesses the resurrection of her brother Lazarus. According to Provençal Tradition, she was established after the death of Christ in Provence with Lazarus and Mary, and defeated the Tarasque at Tarascon, where a Royal Collegiate Church was built in her honor, on the site of her tomb. As for the condition, note that the left hand of the character is missing as well as the handle of the bucket, also missing on the hood, dents on the hood, a piece of the cape glued back on. We report a splinter of wood on the dragon's ear, a skip on the bottom of the bucket and some cracks on the base of the base. Our numerous photos allow you to appreciate the quality of this sculpture. For the condition, please detail the photos. Feel free to zoom in. The photos are an integral part of the description.
