Old salt box, early 19th century, historically the salt box has two storage spaces: a compartment under the top lid for coarse salt, and a drawer at the bottom for fine salt, today it is mostly limited to a decorative role. With the flour box, when resting, it was hung in a dry place near the hearth, where the pots smoked, so that the salt was accessible and the flour kept safe from rodents.
