Michel BATLLE (born in 1946) Abstract Composition, 1970 Ink and spray paint on paper Dimensions: 60 × 43 cm Signed and dated bottom right (1970) This abstract work on paper, created with ink and spray paint, is characteristic of the research conducted by Michel Batlle in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The composition combines dark sprayed areas with light reserves, crossed by incisive lines and spontaneous graphic gestures, creating a tension between control and expressiveness. The work's exploration of contrast, trace, and movement positions this piece within the continuity of lyrical abstraction and informal art, while also foreshadowing the artist's later explorations around sign, writing, and graffiti. The use of spray paint, still uncommon at that time on paper, gives the overall work an experimental and decidedly contemporary dimension. Signed and dated work on paper, from a former Toulouse collection (collection Jean Dieuzaide). Generally in good condition, with slight signs of time related to the nature of the medium. ⸻ Michel Batlle – Biography Born in 1946 in Monaco, Michel Batlle is a major French artist in the contemporary scene, active since the late 1960s. After studying art, he quickly developed an experimental practice that blends gestural abstraction, signs, writing, and unconventional techniques, notably the use of spray paint. In the 1970s, his work engages in a reflection on sign, language, and graffiti, placing him among the pioneers of an urban and conceptual aesthetic. From the 1980s onwards, Michel Batlle gains international recognition, exhibiting in numerous galleries and institutions in France and abroad. His work is now part of several public and private collections.
