Description

Charming wooden panel painted in gouache and ink of a scene representing a little Alsatian woman leading geese.

Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias "Hansi" (1873-1951), was a prolific Alsatian artist, famous for his talents as a painter, designer and caricaturist. Born in Colmar, his artistic life began after studying at the Beaux-arts in Lyon. From 1909, he devoted himself entirely to drawing, expressing his attachment to France and his determination to see Alsace become French again through his works. Before the First World War, he developed a distinctive style and strong anti-German sentiment, illustrating Alsatian cultural resistance. During the war, he joined the French army, where he used his artistic skills in propaganda.
After the war, his publications reflected an idealized vision of an Alsace joyfully reunited with France, although this representation did not always conform to reality. Despite his patriotic commitment, Hansi gradually withdrew from the public scene, confronted with tensions between Alsatian cultural aspirations and French assimilation policies.
During the Second World War, due to his anti-Nazi beliefs, he suffered persecution and found refuge in Switzerland. His artistic work remains a reference, not only for his political commitment, but also for his characteristic aesthetic, mixing humor and social criticism. His artistic heritage continues to influence the representation of Alsace and to fuel the dialogue on its cultural identity.

I measured 22 cm high x 52 cm wide and 3 cm thick for a total weight of 450 g. with his supervision. The panel alone measures 19 x 49 cm.
