Description

Original photo dating, presumably from the 1950s, purchased during the sale of the Jean Dieuzaide library in 2025. Original photo by Jean Dieuzaide (1921-2003) is one of the great French photographers of the 20th century, born in Grenade-sur-Garonne near Toulouse. From 1944, he made his first reports during the Liberation of Toulouse and quickly stood out with the strength of his vision. A humanist and curious about everything, he first signed his photos with the pseudonym Yan before establishing his name in the world of photography. His work covers many areas: reportage, portrait, still life, landscapes, Romanesque architecture, and travel. He notably photographed Spain, Portugal, Turkey, and the south of France with intensity. His images combine formal rigor and sensitivity, reflecting his attachment to everyday life as well as heritage. Among his famous images is "The Marriage of the Tightrope Walkers" taken in Toulouse in 1954. Jean Dieuzaide received prestigious distinctions: the Niépce Prize in 1955, then the Nadar Prize for his photographic works. However, his role goes beyond creation: he was an indefatigable advocate for photography as a true art form. In 1974, he founded the Château d’Eau gallery in Toulouse, the first public institution in France dedicated solely to photography, which remains a key venue for enthusiasts and collectors. Today, his work is preserved and studied in major institutions, notably at the municipal archives of Toulouse, and continues to be exhibited in France and abroad. A talented photographer and passionate intermediary, Jean Dieuzaide remains a major figure who marked the history of French photography.
