Description

Stunning oil on canvas from the late 19th century, signed at the bottom right by Romanelli, depicting a lively Orientalist scene on the shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul. In the foreground, a group of men dressed in colorful djellabas and turbans relax near a sebil (public fountain with a dome). On the left, an Ottoman caique glides across the waters, facing the recognizable silhouettes of Istanbul's mosques and minarets, bathed in golden light. The composition, with a very harmonious balance, evokes the fascination of Italian painters for the East at the end of the 19th century. This canvas enchants with its peaceful atmosphere and shimmering light. The opaline skies, fiery reds of the foliage, and turquoise blues of the water convey a charming Orientalism, inherited from the great Italian travelers of the 19th century. Romanelli, whose signature appears on several views of Constantinople, Cairo, and Tangier, illustrates here all the sweetness of a "dreamed Orient." I note the presence of fine craquelures and other micros details as well as an old trace located on the upper left edge, indicating the placement of a now-missing period frame. Golden wooden frame from the contemporary period. Maximum dimensions with frame: 61.3 x 52.7 cm / Dimensions of the view only: 53 x 44.3 cm. Weight: 1454 grams. Careful shipping worldwide. Type: Oil. Country of origin: Turkey. Artistic movement: Italian School. Genre: Orientalism. Features: Framed, Signed, On canvas. Theme: Countries of the world, Travel.
