Alexis Kreyder (1839–1912) was a French painter, born in Andlau in Alsace. A specialist in flower and fruit still lifes, he first studied in Strasbourg with Eugène Laville, then with Georges Zipélius and Fuchs in Mulhouse. He settled in Paris in 1859 and participated in his first Salon in 1863, where he regularly exhibited for three decades. He received several awards, including a second-class medal in 1884 and a silver medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Knighted in the Legion of Honor in 1896, Kreyder was a member of the Société des artistes français and later of the Société nationale des beaux-arts. His works are now preserved in several museums, notably in Paris (Musée d’Orsay, Musée du Louvre), as well as in Colmar, Mulhouse, Strasbourg, Auch, and Epinal. His work, marked by a meticulous rendering of materials and a balanced composition, is inspired by Flemish masters. Description of the artwork: Basket of Fruits This still life represents a wicker basket filled with various fruits (grapes, cherries, apricots) against a dark background. The arrangement of the fruits and the soft light emphasize their realism and texture.
