The king's request was reiterated to Jean Sylvain Bailly by the grand master of ceremonies, Henri-Évrard de Dreux-Brézé, who replied: "The assembled Nation cannot receive orders". Then Mirabeau would have come forward to say: "Go tell those who send you that we are here by the will of the people, and that we will only be snatched from it by the power of bayonets." From left to right: an upholsterer removes one of the benches, illustrating the decision to suspend the sessions of the Estates General. Bailly, dean and president of the third estate, leans on the table, both hands widely extended. Father Grégoire, Father Sieyès, Paul-Victor de Seze and some gentlemen are near him, illustrating the alliance of part of the clergy and the nobility to the third estate.
