Description

Brass repoussé mirror with "parecloses", Louis XIV style — Napoleonic era, 19th century. Charming mirror known as "à la Huguenote" or "à parecloses", a highly sought-after model of 19th-century French furniture, inspired by Dutch and French mirrors from the Grand Siècle. It consists of a wooden frame dressed with repoussé and chiseled brass plates, featuring rich rococo decoration: scrolls, acanthus leaves, and beaded friezes running all around the central beveled glass.

The heavily developed pediment is crowned with a shell at the top and adorned in its center with a basket of fruits (bunches, pears, apples) surrounded by scrolls and pierced foliage, with a second shell at the lower part of the pediment. On either side of the central glass, the "parecloses" (padded side bands and mirror on the pediment, characteristic of this type of mirror). The mercury glass shows slight oxidation at the edges (speckling/spotting visible at the top of the mirror), which is quite normal and even sought after for this type of antique piece, attesting to its authenticity.
