TEST PROOF LITHOGRAPH BY JEAN YVES COMMERE 3rd STATE XXEME A4120 This lithograph is signed Jean-Yves Commère and bears the 3rd state proof print. It is a 20th century work, probably from the 60s and 70s. Jean-Yves Commère (1920-1986), painter, watercolorist, designer and French illustrator. In 1936, Jean Commère was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Angers, then he entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris two years later, in the studio of sculptor Jean Boucher. From 1936, he participated in numerous group exhibitions in France and abroad. In 1951 his first private exhibition took place in Paris at the Monique de Groote gallery. He won the Othon Friesz grand prize for his painting Inondations à Denée in 1952. Jean Commère created the stage curtain, the sets and the costumes for Béla Bartok's Concerto aux Étoiles at the Paris Opera in 1955. He painted the portraits of 'Yves Montand and Simone Signoret for Les sorcières de Salem in 1956. In 1957, his painting Le Vel d'hiv was acquired by the city of Paris. Commère was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1958 and took part in the Venice Biennale the same year. He was promoted to officer of the same order in 1979. In 1971, the Philippe Reichenbach gallery offered him a first retrospective in New York. He won numerous prizes (critics' prize, prize of the Salon of witness painters, prize of the Deauville Biennale, Francis Smith prize, etc.). He returned to his native region of Anjou in the early 1980s. In 1984, the city of Angers offered Pope John Paul II a Descent from the Cross of Gossip. His wife, Suzanne, died in July 1986. Jean Commère ended his life in October of the same year. It represents a multitude of bees which probably forage through the flowers. The lithograph is in good condition under its protective glass, we note traces and small stains on the pass, and significant friction and wear on the black rods especially on the lower right.
