Description

Rare old Holophane ceiling light with prismatic glass, circa 1930, in Art Deco / modernist style.

Elegant fixture, composed of a molded Holophane prismatic glass dome, mounted on a remarkable circular metal frame with intricate decoration.

The glass features the characteristic network of fine prismatic ribs typical of Holophane productions, originally designed to refract, diffuse, and distribute light evenly. The Holophane marking is visible on the glass (see dedicated photographs).

The frame, of fine quality execution, consists of a circular base with finely crafted decoration and three decorative fixing screws, each about 2 cm in diameter, which hold the dome in place. The whole piece has an aesthetic very representative of industrial and modernist fixtures from the interwar period.

Comparative research links this type of ceiling light to French Holophane productions from the 1920s-1930s: models from this period are notably documented in Holophane catalogs and in French Art Deco lighting furniture. The shape and dimensions of the dome are also consistent with several preserved or offered French examples in the specialized market.

Dating: circa 1930, attributed to Holophane glassware. The metal frame is presented as contemporary with the glassware, with no confirmed manufacturer attribution.

Dimensions
Base diameter: 24 cm
Glass dome diameter: 20 cm
Diameter of decorative screws: 2 cm
Total height of the mounted fixture: 9 cm

Condition

Intact glass, without cracks, chips, or apparent losses. Frame in very good condition as well. A particularly clean piece for a fixture from this period.

About Holophane

Holophane is one of the great historical names in prismatic lighting. The prismatic glass technology developed in the late 19th century allowed for the production of diffusers intended especially for public buildings, industrial properties, and modern architectures. French Holophane production notably expanded in Les Andelys.

This type of glassware is now particularly sought after for its optical qualities, industrial aesthetic, and successful integration into Art Deco, modernist, or contemporary interiors.

A rare and decorative piece, particularly interesting for a collector of antique lighting, Holophane glassware, or Art Deco design.
