Very nice work of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. These solid wood dolls made in the 1920s are hand painted.

Historically, kokeshi emerged during the second half of the Edo period (1603-1868) in northern Japan.
The city of Tôhoku specializes in their creation to satisfy the many users of its thermal springs.

Kokeshi dolls traditionally bring prosperity (good harvests, fertility...),
protection (against evil spirits, fires, earthquakes, diseases, etc.) and happiness to those who possess them.
It has also become a gift to celebrate a birth, to show friendship or love.
