Gabriel-Charles Deneux 1856-1943 watercolor representing The Artigues market signed lower left, countersigned and located on the back. Beautiful, very lively market scene Dimensions with frame: 27 x 22.5 cm Gabriel-Charles Deneux or Déneux, born September 8, 1856 in Paris and died in the same city on November 8, 1943, is a French painter. Gabriel-Charles Deneux entered the Paris School of Fine Arts where he was a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabane. He traveled to Greece and Sicily in search of ancient painting techniques using encaustic and egg. He exhibited at the Salon from 1880. A member of the Salon d'hiver and the Société nationale des beaux-arts, we owe him numerous portraits (Madame Nina Pack, of the Opera, Miss Alice Berthier, of the Variétés) as well as genre scenes and orientalist subjects (The Pardon of Our Lady of Clarity, The Fire of Forgiveness, Salammbô or even encaustic murals at the Colonial School, at the Winter Palace in Algiers, at the church of Tlemcen and, among others, at the hotel of the Count of Aulan. He is the father-in-law of the resistance fighter René Quenouille (1884-1945).
