Description

Eugène Anatole CARRIERE (1849-1906) The art of suggestion par excellence, the work of Eugène CARRIERE (Gournay/Marne 1849-1906 Paris) evolves towards a monochromy of earth and ochre, inspiring PICASSO, who retains only the games of shadow and light. His art is praised by GAUGUIN and Maurice DENIS but remains misunderstood by the general public. Since the 1880s, Eugène Carrière has forged a friendship with RODIN, sharing aesthetic views; the sculptor entrusted him with the poster and the preface for the catalog of his 1900 exhibition at the Pavillon de l’Alma. He is also the portraitist of VERLAINE, Edmond de GONCOURT, Isadora DUNCAN, GAUGUIN, and Pablo CASALS. A witness of his time, Eugène CARRIERE participates in the movement of ideas: defense of Dreyfus alongside CLEMENCEAU and ZOLA, women's emancipation, reflection on the death penalty, art in democracy, etc. Never dogmatic, he defends a humanism that places human rights at the forefront. A precursor of independent art, his ultimate fight is the creation of the Salon d’Automne in 1903, of which he is Honorary President. He passed away on March 27, 1906, in his studio at the Villa des Arts in Montmartre. Still little known to the general public, his work is exhibited in the most prestigious museums around the world, including the Musée d’Orsay, the Tate Gallery in London, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, waiting to be discovered.
