PINX ENGRAVING ALFRED LOUIS BRUNET DEBAINES LANDSCAPE AT SUNSET Signature lower left Brunet Debaines and stamp lower right of the Ste Normande engraving n ° 90 Alfred-Louis Brunet-Debaines (1845-1939) is a painter, draftsman and French engraver who made a career in England. Louis Alfred Henri was born on November 5, 1845 in Le Havre to Charles Fortuné Louis Brunet-Debaines (1801-1862), architect from Vannes, and Catherine Eugénie Marvie (1808-1877). very young, an engraver accomplished in the technique of etching and fond of urban landscapes. He entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1863 and attended the studio of Isidore Pils. He then became a member of the Société des aquafortistes in 1865 and perfected his knowledge with Léon Gaucherel, Maxime Lalanne and Jules Jacquemart, the latter exercising a certain influence on him. He exhibited his first creations at the Salon of 1866, then regularly until 1885. In 1873, he obtained a 1st class medal at the Salon, the year in which he was placed in exhibition, then a medal of honor in 1903. Editions d'Alfred Cadart will publish about ten prints of him, among others in L'Illustration nouvelle and L'Eau forte in (1868-1876), among which there are many views of Rouen. His Parisian studio was located at 58 rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs then 13 rue Montmartre (1885). From 1872, he gained a certain fame in England, where he was invited to exhibit by the art critic Philip Gilbert Hamerton (in): he participates in his two illustrated art journals, The Portfolio and Etching and Etchers, for which he delivers numerous reproductions of the English 18th and 19th century masters; above all, he produced a striking series of ancient abbeys in the north of the country, jointly with his colleague Henri Toussaint, The Ruined Abbeys of Yorkshire (1883). Between 1872 and 1883 he exhibited his prints at the Royal Academy and in 1882 he was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in London and was a regular contributor to The Art Journal until the 1900s. note small oxidation stains and halos, pitting, slight wrinkling of handling, traces of folds in places, small lack, micro - tear ....
