Biography of Jean Bérain: Jean Bérain, known as "the First" or "the Elder," was born on June 4, 1640, in Saint-Mihiel (Meuse), and died on January 24, 1711, in Paris. Son of a Lorraine gunsmith, he settled in Paris with his family to escape the Thirty Years' War. Trained under Charles Le Brun, he became in 1674 "designer of the King's Chamber and Cabinet," a position that entrusted him with the creation of decorations, costumes, and ornaments for the festivities, ballets, and ceremonies of the court of Louis XIV. His style, marked by light arabesques and playful grotesques, influenced decorative art in France and Europe, laying the foundations for the Régence and rococo styles. Bérain also collaborated with the greatest artisans of his time, such as André-Charles Boulle, and his engravings were widely disseminated, inspiring ceramics, furniture, and textiles.
