Description

Superb English majolica vase from the Stoke-on-Trent region signed by George Jones from the years 1861-1873 in good condition, a very rare model and signature from this ceramist recognized both in England and worldwide for the quality of his majolica pieces. The vase is in a flowing green and yellow color, with lion paw feet and floral decorations. Normal wear from time and some tiny chips, but really in nice condition for its age. The vase measures 32.5 cm tall. The artist: The majolica produced by George Jones rivals that of Minton and Wedgwood in terms of design and craftsmanship.

In 1862, George Jones entered the pottery business with the acquisition of the Bridge Works, which produced white granite items.

In 1864, Jones bought parcels of land from Colin Minton Campbell of the Minton factory for the construction of the Trent pottery, which was completed at the end of 1865.

It was in this new and efficient pottery that George Jones began the production of majolica in 1866. A bilobed relief cartouche with STOKE ON TRENT is rarely seen beneath the initials and the design number inked above.

In 1873, Jones's two eldest sons, Frank Ralph and George Henry Jones, had become familiar with the business and partnered with their father.

The company was renamed George Jones & Sons and the name "Crescent" was registered as a trademark of the new company.

At that time, the company employed 590 skilled workers.

After George Jones's death in 1893, the family business continued to thrive until the early 20th century.

The company was sold to managing director Walter Bakewell in 1929, and by 1951, the trading name George Jones & Sons was no longer in use.

The Crescent factory was demolished in 1959 after nearly a century of ceramic production.
