Description

Note a hole in the middle on the left side see photo, very beautiful example by BOSSE Abraham (1602 - 1676) - "The Marriage of the Queen of Poland - Ceremony witnessing the marriage contract made in Fontainebleau in the presence of Their Majesties between Vladislaus IV of Poland and Sweden [...] on one side, and Louise Marie de Gonzague, Princess of Mantua and Nevers, on the other side, the 25th day of September 1645". 1645. Original etching. Ref.: Blum, no. 422. I.F.F 17th century, no. 1223. on laid paper. "Louise-Marie de Gonzague, daughter of Charles I, Duke of Mantua, and Catherine of Lorraine, married in 1645 the King of Poland Vladislaus IV. This was a considerable social event, well captured by Bosse's print, which is one of the most ambitious and successful of his work. The very detailed legend adequately describes the image of the scene of the signing of the marriage contract, which took place in Fontainebleau on September 26, 1645, as noted in his Memoirs (1656) by the famous print collector Michel de Marolles, infatuated with the beautiful Marie de Gonzague. The scene takes place in the king's chamber, which is divided into two parts. In the royal part, inside the balustrade, we recognize the Queen Mother Anne of Austria, who holds her younger son, Philippe, Duke of Anjou, by the hand, while the young Louis XIV proudly leans on his cane. Behind the queen, Count Loménie de Brienne, Secretary of State, reads the contract aloud, which is respectfully listened to by the future Queen of Poland accompanied by Gerhard Denhof, Count Palatine of Pomerania, dressed in the French style, also in the presence of Secretary of State Guénégaud. Below the balustrade is a crowd of courtiers, among whom we can distinguish Cardinal Mazarin and Cardinal Alessandro Bicchi. The other lords, although named in the legend, are difficult to identify."
