Description

Smoky convex mirror by painter Claude Lorrain, 19th century in a lined box M3994 This smoky convex mirror is from the late 19th century. The black mirror, also known as Claude Lorrain's mirror or Claude's mirror, is a small mirror with a slightly convex surface, tinted in a dark color, traditionally smoke black. Set in a binding similar to that of a sketchbook or held in a case with a lid, this device was in the 18th century the tool of artists and connoisseurs, travelers and enthusiasts of landscape painting. The black mirror serves to present the subject to be painted isolated from its environment and to reduce the tones of the motif, thus allowing for a quick determination of an optimal framing and a better appreciation of the distribution of values. Regarding the condition, there are small stains on the case and some chips on the mirror. Our photos allow you to appreciate the quality of the item. For the condition, please refer to the detailed photos. Feel free to zoom in. The photos are an integral part of the description.
