18th Century Fire Lighter, Gun Setter This object is a fire lighter. With a flint stone (usually made of flint) and some amadou, the fire lighter is an essential component of a striker lighter. The blade of the lighter is struck against the flint. The friction creates sparks, which are caught by the amadou. The glowing amadou is then placed in a nest for amadou, and the flame is ignited by air. From the 18th century onwards, fire lighters were particularly ornate and richly decorated. Our object is a luxury fire lighter. These were often equipped with figurative brass handles and a narrow recessed steel ramp. The handle of our fire lighter is made of brass and depicts a hound.
