Superb Asian print depicting a five-clawed imperial dragon, an exclusive symbol of the emperor and celestial power. The design is executed in black ink on very fine, fibrous handmade paper, likely rice paper (xuan) or mulberry paper (kozo). The contours display variations in density typical of a woodblock print, later enhanced by hand to strengthen the blacks. China 19th century: the paper, very fibrous with irregular edges, confirms an ancient artisanal print, not industrial. The subject features the five-clawed imperial dragon spitting the flaming pearl - a symbol of power, prosperity, and mastery over the elements: decorative motifs from the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911), a period when imperial dragons appeared on banners, robes, and hangings. The piece is mounted on a thick sheet of contemporary quality paper. This is itself positioned in a modern gilded frame (which can be easily removed).
