Fat Lava ceramic designates, in a somewhat reductive way, the productions of German factories and studios from the 1950s to 1970s. It takes its name from the effects of enamelling in relief, frequently used with orange-yellow colors, which give the surface of the pieces a characteristic appearance of bubbling lava. The term Fat Lava first appeared as the title of the German ceramic exhibition held in London in July-August 2006. The most widespread and widely exported productions come from Bay, Dümler & Breiden, Scheurich, Carstens, Jasba, Strehla or Roth. The coins are usually signed with a molded relief mark, W.GERMANY or WEST GERMANY, and a two-part numbering. The first number corresponds to the vase model which can receive multiple different enamels. The second number usually corresponds to the size of the piece.
