Description

Oil on canvas good general condition Jean Arnavielle experienced in Paris, where his parents were wholesale jewelers on the Quai Voltaire, a fairly free childhood as a "neighborhood wanderer", very early on attending performances of the nearby Cirque d'Hiver to be one then “of all the theaters of Paris of which he will remain as faithful a spectator as he is a merciless critic”[2]. Ignacio Zuloaga. After his military service completed in Le Havre in 1901, he made a long journey with a friend along the Seine, painting on the subject and lingering in particular at Pont-de-l'Arche, Rouen "where he said " taken by the strange atmosphere that he would subsequently only find in Holland "", finally La Bouille from which he brought back numerous paintings which constituted his submission to the Salon des indépendants of 1908[2]. When in Paris, in February-March 1912, he exhibited at the Galerie Devambez alongside Ignacio Zuloaga, a Spanish painter then living in Segovia, the Gazette des beaux-arts praised him as “showing very skilful landscapes”[3] . A volunteer during the First World War, Jean Arnavielle was assigned to the health service of the city of Rouen where he formed lasting friendships with the violinist Robert Krettly and the actor Georges Dorival. After the armistice of 1918, he stayed for a time in Rouen where he had several exhibitions. Then returning to Paris, he nevertheless maintained a residence there and was said to be “Rouennais at heart”[2]. Fernand Chalandre. In landscapes that Gérald Schurr and the Bénézit Dictionary agree to see "composed in the manner of those of Albert Marquet", the first further remarking that "his silhouettes in parks are very skilful"[4], his painting depicts resorts in Île-de-France (Versailles), in Normandy (views of Rouen and the Seine valley)[5], in Brittany (views of Douarnenez, Le Pardon de Sainte-Anne-la-Palud in Plonévez-Porzay, L'Île-Tudy), in the Alpes-Maritimes (The bay of Antibes), in Haute-Loire (The rock of Espaly), in Savoie (The Vanoise massif) and especially in Nièvre (views of Chevroches, La Charité-sur-Loire, Clamecy and Nevers) where, with Louis Charlot, he is among the Parisian artists attracted by André Deslignères[6]. Like the latter, alongside painting, he is located within the Nivernaise school of engraving of Fernand Chalandre[7]. Quai de Paris, Rouen. The catalogs of the Salon des Indépendants from March-May 1913 and January-February 1920 say he is domiciled at 5, rue Stanislas in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. The March-May 1926 catalog says he was doubly installed at La Ruche, artists' city at 2, passage de Dantzig in the 15th arrondissement of Paris and at 8, quai de Paris in Rouen. Two of these catalogs also establish, through the views of Toledo and Segovia dated 1914 which constitute his submissions, a pictorial relationship to the Spain of Ignacio Zuloaga
