Description

Art of suggestion par excellence, the work of Eugène CARRIERE (Gournay/Marne 1849-1906 Paris) evolves towards a monochromy of earth and ochre, inspiring PICASSO, which retains only the play of shadow and light. His art is praised by GAUGUIN and Maurice DENIS but remains misunderstood by the general public. From the 1880s, Eugène Carrière linked up with RODIN, whose friendship and aesthetic ideas he shared; the sculptor entrusts him with the poster and the preface to the catalog of his 1900 exhibition at the Pavillon de l'Alma. He is also the portraitist of VERLAINE, Edmond de GONCOURT, Isadora DUNCAN, GAUGUIN and Pablo CASALS. Witness of his time, Eugène CARRIERE participates in the movement of ideas: defense of Dreyfus alongside CLEMENCEAU and ZOLA, female emancipation, reflection on the death penalty, art in democracy, etc. Never dogmatic, he defends a humanism which places human rights at the forefront. Precursor of an independent art, his last fight is the creation of the Salon d'Automne in 1903 of which he is Honorary President. He died on March 27, 1906 in his studio at the Villa des Arts in Montmartre. Still unknown to the general public, his work exhibited in the most prestigious museums around the world, the Musée d'Orsay, the Tate Gallery in London, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg or the Museum of Modern Art in New York, remains to be discovered. This drawing is framed it has probably never been opened, it is most likely a portrait of Léon, the theme of the portrait of a child is very common in Eugène career
