# During the Feast of Fools in 1482 in Paris, Quasimodo, the Hunchback of Notre-Dame, is elected Pope of the Fools. He sits on a throne and parades through the city amidst the jeers of the crowd. Pierre Gringoire, a distressed poet and philosopher, tries in vain to get the people to contemplate his work rather than the parade. The archdeacon Claude Frollo appears, halts the parade, and orders Quasimodo to return with him to Notre-Dame.
