Description

Very beautiful antique vase, from the 1920s to 1940s, possibly mid-1930s. Unmarked, made of fine stoneware biscuit (or possibly porcelain), in a style blending Art Nouveau and chinoiserie. Handcrafted, turned, stamped decoration and hand-painted, with glazing only on the inside. Amphora shape with a slightly elevated small round base, a constricted neck and flared mouth, featuring two double handles in the spirit of Art Nouveau/Art Deco. Unglazed exterior, matte texture of beige biscuit, decorated with dark Payne's gray blue borders and floral and geometric patterns of Chinese inspiration, with some areas resembling a paisley motif, painted gray/black in the petals and on the leaves, borders and handles painted black. Glazed interior in metallic brown-black, reminiscent of certain Belgian productions from the interwar period; the shape of the handles, material, and technique suggest European manufacturing. The chinoiserie style decoration can be misleading, it is most likely not an Asian production. This vase does not come from an industrial or semi-industrial series production: a slight deformation of the neck highlights manual shaping. An unusual and rare object, very decorative, probably from Belgian, French, or Dutch production. Height 25.5 cm, width 21 cm at the handles, maximum diameter 15-16 cm, diameter at the neck 10 cm, weight about 1 kg. Perfect condition, nothing notable, a few discreet small stains, visible use inside but not pronounced.
